Eventually I learned how to manage my own environment, and I found that the modest learning hump was more than made up for by having a stable and maintainable Dwarf Fortress installation. For a long time it wasn’t consistently updated across platforms and I frequently discovered bugs in the different distributions. I have always had trouble with it, especially when going between Linux and Windows. It’s a compilation of Dwarf Fortress mods and utilities, with a convenient installer and config editor. This tutorial assumes that the user is setting up the game for a Windows environment, but the steps adapt easily to macOS or Linux. This tutorial does not use the Lazy Newb Pack.
